5 Decisions You Need To Make Before Breast Augmentation

If you are considering breast augmentation surgery, this is not a rash decision. It is likely something you have been considering for some time. While you may have a general idea of size, there are more decisions that you will need to make before your breast augmentation.

Round or Teardrop

Round implants are just that, round. Teardrop implants are shaped more like a natural breast. Patients with little breast tissue typically use teardrop implants because they provide a more natural look. However, if you have more breast tissue, you may be able to get away with a round implant.

Smooth or textured

Implants come with both a smooth surface and a textured surface. The smooth surface implants are the most common type of implant. They move freely within the pocket, which gives you a natural look and feel. On the other hand, textured implants are less likely to move around and are often used for patients who need revision surgery.

Silicone or saline

The next decision you need to make is whether you want a silicone or saline implant. Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water, while silicone implants are filled with silicone gel.

Both types of implants have their pros and cons. Saline implants are less expensive than silicone implants, have a lower risk of capsular contracture, and have approval for patients over 18. Silicone implants, on the other hand, look and feel more like real breasts but are not approved until the age of 22.

Lift or not

You may need a breast lift in addition to your breast implants. A breast lift removes excess skin and tightens the surrounding tissue to support your new breasts.

Incision location

Like real estate, breast augmentation is all about location, location, location. There are four main areas where your surgeon can make an incision:

  • Under the breast (inframammary)
  • Around the areola (periareolar)
  • In the armpit (transaxillary)
  • Through the belly button or navel (transumbilical)

The location of your incision will depend on the size and shape of your breasts and your overall body type. There are pros and cons to each approach. Your surgeon will help you decide on the best location for your incision.

Breast augmentation surgery is a big decision. There are a lot of factors to consider before you undergo the procedure. However, with the help of your surgeon, you can make the best decisions for your body and goals.
